From the recording The Word Is Love

Track 8:  "Now They Call It The O.C."

I wrote this after I caught an episode of the "O.C." on television.  I kept seeing places that I recognized.  I finally realized that "O.C." stood for Orange County, California, my old stomping grounds.

They say that memories can play tricks on you,
But here’s a memory I know to be true.
Once upon a time there wasn’t smog
Or a freeway,
Just two lane roads
Through miles of orange groves,
And marshes and green pastures along the Back Bay,
Where horses would graze and children would play.
And a red-winged blackbird sang his song.
And a young girl felt like she belonged.

Back then, we called it Orange County.
Now they call it “the O.C.”
Yeah, they call it “the O.C.”

I don’t know if there’s anything left but buildings and the sea,
But they call it “the O.C.”
Yeah they call it “the O.C.”

Now, way back when, surfing was the favorite sport
In a place we called West Newport.
And, if you couldn’t afford a board, you weren’t left out.
You could still body surf and shout, “Surf’s up!”
And, whenever we saw a big wave, we’d all yell “Outside!”
And rush out to catch our great ride.
And on Friday nights we’d watch Rawhide.

Back then, we called it Orange County.
Now they call it “the O.C.”
Yeah they call it “the O.C.”

And once more they’ll be places along the Back Bay
For red-winged blackbirds to sing and children to play.
And the smog will be all gone, even from L.A.
And the children will swim and shout, “Surf’s Up!’
Again and again.
And the oceans will be clean enough even for the fish
To swim in.

For, if you save God’s creatures who dwell in the sea,
Then, you’ve already saved you and me.
And they’ll call it “the O.C.”
Yeah, they’ll call it “the O.C.”

If you save God’s creatures who dwell in the sea,
Then, you’ve already saved you and me.
And they’ll call it “the O.C.”
Yeah, they’ll call it “the O.C.”

Yeah, they’ll call it “the O.C.”
“Surf’s Up!”
Yeah, they’ll call it “the O.C.”
“Outside!”

Yeah, they’ll call it “the O.C.”
And they’ll call it “the O.C.”
And they’ll call it “the O.C.”
And they’ll call it “the O.C.”
“Surf’s Up!”
